Dead Grateful

Gratefulness is a basic human value, and takes prominent place within Judaic principles. And one that more often than not, we conveniently forget.

Two years ago I started entertaining the idea of starting a website. But when it dawned on me that it wasn’t as simple as buying a domain and a site for the thirty-odd bucks, I gave up. A year later, I was reading something (can’t remember what it was) that linked to the Sahigetz – and the rest is history. So thank you Shaigetz, for pulling my head out of the sand and informing me of free blogs, and also inspiring me in a way or two – despite your British accent.

Most people on planet Earth, I believe, would not describe the noise emanating from twelve trailer-trucks’ engines, the whining of a tortured hound, four chainsaws and a two tenors being skinned alive as “music”. Yet that is exactly the impression one gets when getting within earshot of what is known as the “Death Metal” musical style. Yet precisely such a “musical” group, Kreator, from Germany has dedicated two of their songs to the Jewish people: “The Second Awakening” and “Suicide Terrorist” – the first being dedicated to the Jews’ return to their land after 2000 years, while the second denounces terrorism and calls for resistance. To the best of my knowledge Jews did not thank them so far. So thank you is all I can say. I’ll listen to those songs anyway.

And finally, I think it is utterly ungrateful to forget the Marines rotting in jail for doing their job. And our president is called a conservative! So far I have seen no Jewish media outlet take on communist murderous traitors John Murtha and journalist Tim McGuirk who caused this ignominious injustice.

A "modern", affluent person, from a mostly modern neighborhood, who eats in places that most “frum” Jews wouldn’t (at least if they’re being watched), recently started prancing around his 4th cousin, the heilige Rebbe of …. Working in an lucrative, well respected company, where he’s probably the only Jew – certainly the only frum one, he started growing a beard a few years ago – and now ZZ Top can be jealous of him. He’s having a family occasion this week. Given that he happens to live a bit far from the cherished Holy Cousin, he arranged for all his 180 guests to spend Shabbos in the shade of the Holy Rebbe, his distant relative, a good hour’s drive from where he lives. I’m sure they’ll enjoy tremendously. I’m also sure that the heilge Rebbe’s bank account will not grow at all after the sentimental encounter.

Live And Let Drive

I am convinced that none of my millions of faithful readers does this, but some people do. Actually, in New Jersey it is the law: you drive on the right, pass on the left. I’m not sure whether it’s a NY law or not, but in Jersey, this law is actually respected, for the most. In the greater NYC are the situation is different, though - people there don’t seem to get it. Or rather, they just don’t give a hoot. So they decide to comfortably stroll at their own pace in the left lane, and whoever wants to drive faster, well, drop dead. Moreover, more often than not, they’ll do everything to prevent you from passing them. They’ll either speed up or slow down so as to drive parallel to the car in the middle lane. Or when you can finally jump out from behind them, they’ll speed up to prevent you from passing them. They seem not to care about the dangers involved, neither do they seem to grasp that the “no left lane driving law” (even if just an ethical and common-sense ‘unwritten law’) has quite a good reason; it is reserved for emergency vehicles. Emergencies, alas, are not restricted to official vehicles: there might be a sick person, a woman in labor, a diabetic with a sudden surge or any other imaginable condition. Furthermore, the impatient driver behind you may just be an angry and aggressive speed-feverish man, who may not care about your safety too much. Even worse, if it is an illegal invader, you know that you’ll never see a penny from his inexistent insurance. And whether the driver behind you is breaking the law, is the police’s business, not yours.
Once I unfortunately had to teach such an obfuscate driver a lesson the hard way. He was driving in the left lane at a much slower pace than the maximum permitted limit. His family was in the car, and he was constantly yammering on the phone. After he foiled nearly ten of my attempts to pass him, I flashed him. Once. Twice. After the fifth short flash, it seemed to me raised his hand (inside the car) – I can’t be sure if he was giving me the finger, but that’s how it seemed to me. I tried a few gentle honks, still to now avail. When I finally managed to pass him, he all of a sudden started chasing me – family, cell phone, and all. I had a long day, and despite my best efforts to emulate Hillel HaZokein, I felt a rage inside me, control I couldn’t keep – I slammed down my brakes, and did not release them until Mr. Cell phone’s nose was a mere few inches of my rear bumper. Nu, I’m not sure if you ever saw a black man become pale, but I did. He stayed inert for a few long moments, probably absorbing the sad reality that not only his brand new BMW, but his entire family, himself and even his darling cell phone were just a heartbeat away from becoming mashed potatoes. I can’t remember what I was thinking at the time, but if I imagined that he would take responsibility for his irresponsibility, I was wrong. He started chasing after me. If you want blood, you’ve got it, I thought to myself, and waited for him to reach me. This time, however, my father’s image emerged in front of my eyes, preventing me from sinning again. So when the bloke actually pulled up to and unleashed a quite impressive, long and juicy string of curses and obscenities – which, I must say, still paled in comparison to what I was preparing from him – I held myself back and calmly said: “Sir, I tried to signal you over ten times to let me pass. You had more than twenty opportunities to do so. You were constantly yammering on the phone, endangering yourself, your family and other drivers. So instead of cursing me, you should thank me for teaching you a good lesson. Next time please drive on the right.” With that, I drove away, never to see him again.

Sadly, I have the impression that all too many of our leaders are driving their communities in the same manner. Slowing down the left lane, not letting anyone pass, obfuscating traffic and progress.

As I told you, the changes are taking effect - slowly but surely. There's one more thing I need to work on - but that will take some more time. In the meantime enjoy it as it is.

Oh yeah, keep endorsing those hybrids, that’s how you’ll save the world. Oh, by the way, as gov’t subsidies and tyrannical regulations keep pushing corn prices higher (ethanol=corn), and more corn is consumed in internal-combustion engines than in digestive tracts, not only everything containing corn keeps rising, but also all products whose production diminished as a result of farmers favoring the more profitable corn are on the rise – wheat, barley, soybeans, plus corn-consumers; cows – hence meat & milk, chickens, eggs etc., - what effect will that have on the average Orthodox family?

The Real Budweiser

Every so often, certain people start complaining about how nasty the Haredim are, how dare they call themselves this or that name, how inflexible they are, they refuse to accept all kinds of Judaic innovations, such as Torah with Science (no fiction) Torah Umedinah, Torah Uporonographia, and such. I also never understood why whine about the evil Mr. Frankel citing Rav Kook and RYBS in his edition of the Rambam only as many times as RYBS or RHS cite the Vayoel Moshe (Satmar Rebbe) or Chidushim Uviurim (Rav Elchonon Wasserman HY”D). Quite ironic that this Shabbos we read in Pirkei Ovos ואל בנתך אל תשען. And it would be worthwhile for those über-rational holy rollers to check out the first Rash”i in our parshe (Poroh). (Unless of course Rash”i is not so relevant.) Oy-vey, those evil Charedim! How dare they reject Torah Ukfirah!

On a more serious note, it would really be worthwhile for the eternal complainers to take a good hard look at themselves, and face up with reality. No one has a problem with someone practicing sciences as a means of earning a living, side by side with Torah, or even at a certain level of knowing the ways of the world, to have a deeper understanding of G-d’s ways, or to refute the heretics/kofrim’s views. But when scientific knowledge, the pursuit of glamorous careers, fame and honor in the secular sector become agendas, ideals and integral parts of Torah-life and then of Torah itself, when the adherents of this ideology parade their feathers looking down on the ‘old’ and ‘obsolete’ “ghetto-dwellers” and “darkness lovers”, selling themselves as the true future of true Judaism, all the while their own backyards aren’t exactly the epitome of pristine cleanliness, I don’t see how they can be offended when those primitive, ignorant, fanatic, throwback black-hatted, white-shirted rigid brutes want to dissociate themselves from Them.

The Eidah Chareidis’ position on Jerusalem’s planned Sodomite Parade is already stirring controversy. It has been suggested that the Eidah has called for violence under code words and expressions. If this is the case, it is a breath of fresh air. It is grand time the legitimate residents of the Holy Land finally take some gutsy action. Unfortunately, this is not materializing in a concise, organized, and well thought-out fashion. Instead of burning trash cans in their own neighborhoods, which doesn’t achieve much more than some traffic and police disturbance, they should silently organize something that would stop the parade in its tracks. And I’m not talking about peaceful negotiations. The Israeli “law” enforcement that has no scruples removing people from their homes, brutalizing protesters and extorting confessions (from Jewish prisoners more than from Arabs) by violent means, is now bound to abet and protect the promoters of abomination on our holy soil. This is however not the really relevant point. In recent years, even G-d fearing Jews came to view secular law as something holier than anything else. Why would arbitrary law set by humans – even the best ones – (and unfortunately usually quite the opposite is true – especially in Israel) trump the Divine Word?

Sodomy is one of the ‘three severe’ offenses, which not only carry capital punishment but one must also give his life rather than transgress them. And the parade is not just a means of the poor oppressed homosexuals to express themselves and demand the basic rights denied them on a daily basis. It is a calculated and organized means of legitimizing the unlegitimizable, of forcing humanity not only to accept homosexuality, but to cherish depravity and degeneracy as supreme values, to disintegrate the family-based social structure and eventually establish a self-murdering society that lives solely for the momentary pleasure. Why do you think they march on Jerusalem, of all places? Their real intent is to force the three monotheistic religions to bow down to them and recognize, legitimize what they believe is a repugnant crime. Isn’t this the very anathema of democracy? Would mayor Blumberg authorize a KKK March through Harlem? Furthermore, would Schwarzenegger authorize an RNC rally in Hollywood? If he would, there is no doubt in my mind that the ultra-tolerant paragons of ultra tolerance would burn the intolerant racist republicans alive. But more importantly, this is the willful and blatant rejection of G-d’s rule, and they want to shove it in our faces, just to show us that they can. For if humanity does not submit to a supreme Law, there is no life after matter – therefore life has no purpose, no meaning, and no reason. And this is the paraders' real goal.
This is Dor HaMabul, dor HaPalgah, this is the war of Amalek. And we must fight it. Fight it relentlessly.

For the Jerusalem municipality to authorize this utter abomination is again a confirmation that the state of Israel was established, and still is, totally opposed to the bare foudations of Judaism. In effect, a state created for racial reasons – for if they shed their mere Judaism, if they trample even the last vestiges of respect that they must relinquish to our nation’s raison d’être, the Torah, - nothing remains. Nothing, but an empty, racist and meaningless monstrosity. That is why they give up everything, that is the reason they refuse to fight for their own country and court the enemy. And now they have aligned themselves with this Amalek – and must be fought equally.

The claim that the Jerusalemites’ behavior is the opposite of Kiddush Hashem is not only myopic, but malicious too. Since when is the whole world considered to be the vociferous gay lobby? Since when is it a Chilul Hashem to stand up to their beliefs and values? Since when is it a Chilul Hashem to fight an oppressive government? Since when is it a Chilul Hashem to withstand depravity and degeneracy? Since when are Kiddush Hashem and Chilul Hashem measured in the eyes of malevolent, deviant populace?

There are, however, all too many problems with the protestors’ behavior. The first is that rather than an organized uprising and fight, they are more bent on thoughtless acts of hooliganism. The have no designated leader, they gather and disperse on a whim, and act with no planning and thought whatsoever. What we need now is a well-designed course of action, thought out by serious leaders, who would harness the people to execute it, even at their own peril. In this manner, I would not rule out even acts of extreme violence. It would be fairly easy to paralyze the city by sabotaging the buses, and instead of burning trash cans in their own neighborhoods, drag them to the planned site of the parade and set them on fire there – the possibilities are virtually endless. But for that of course a strong leader is needed, and a leader rises from a strong and cohesive unity – something to which we seem incapable and unwilling to bring ourselves even under the ultimate threat.

The US Orthodox media and rabbinical leadership also behave in an utterly despicable manner. Again, each follows its own lilliputian agenda – one is silent for fear of alienating two and a half congregants, most condemn those ‘irresponsible Haredim’, and of course many are all too eager to jump at the Edah’t throat – “finally we can get even with those anti-Zionist vermin!” Right on!
The least we must do is to forcefully and unanimously condemn the abomination, and organize prayers to cancel it. Don’t hold your breath though – you may choke.

It seems that unity is achieved only for evil purposes – such as the Sodom parade.
